The Nutcracker Project
Artwork created in response to George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ by NYC public school student Dana Stevens (PS 59X), a participant in The Nutcracker Project. |
Designed to promote literacy and artistic expression, students use the elements and themes of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ as vehicles of study. Students take part in five in-school workshops with a NYCB Teaching Artist and attend a live performance of The Nutcracker at the David H. Koch Theater. Through movement exercises and writing poetry based on the ballet’s themes and their own lives, students explore themes such as family and differences of opinion, dreams, and imagination. Student work is published in the annual Nutcracker Project Anthology.
